Masala Fish

Spicy Tilapia
By Nani

Ingredients

  • 1-2 lbs tilapia or halibut fish fillet
  • 6-8 garlic cloves
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 3-4 green chilli slit lengthwise
  • 1-2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1-2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp cumin/coriander powder
  • 2-3 tsp Shan fish masala
  • 2 tbs oil
  • Chopped cilantro for garnish
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt to taste

RECIPE

  1. Wash the fish fillets thoroughly and set aside.
  2. Blend garlic, 2 green chillis, tomato, and cilantro. Use little to no water. The consistency should be paste-like, not runny. Add in red chilli powder, paprika, Shan Fish Masala, salt, cumin/coriander powder, and turmeric powder.
  3. Marinate the fish in this mixture. Leave aside for 15 minutes.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan. Lift the fish so that excess liquid does not spill into the pan. Scrape off some masala if needed.
  5. Fry the fish on both sides carefully. Set aside.
  6. Remove blackened masala from the pan. Add a little more oil, then stir in the remaining mixture. Add more Shan Fish Masala (to taste), lemon juice, and green chillies.
  7. Sauté until the mixture is well combined and the garlic scent has diminished.
  8. Generously cover the fish with the prepared masala. Garnish with green onion, cilantro, and green chilli slit lengthwise. Serve hot.
